Tracy + The Plastics03.10.06

Last night, I broke my “no going out on a school night” rule and headed on over to the 7th St. Entry to check out a Homocore show that featured Gay Beast, Ear Candy, and Tracy + The Plastics.

I arrived after Gay Beast’s performance (still haven’t seen ‘em live) and caught Ear Candy (cheesy delicious fun) as well as Tracy + The Plastics.

First things first, Ear Candy is hilarious, frivolous, mindless entertainment, which is good.

Tracy + The Plastics is hilarious, amusing, intelligent entertainment, which is great.
I saw Tracy + The Plastics back in 2000 or 2001 - I can’t remember which. It was at this place in Dinkytown that used to have music performances but has since become a coffee shop or restaurant (on 14th St.).
Any-hoo, she wowed me back then.
Last night was fun and kept me on the tips of my toes (no edge of the seat here - standing room only).

She was just as good last night, but her performance was far too short and ended with a whimper. Tracy + The Plastics are done for now - I wonder what Wynne Greenwood will be up to next.
When did it become ok for headliners to perform twenty minute sets?

Apple. Fiona Apple.03.03.06

She’s an Extraordinary Machine!

Let’s make a few things clear:
1) I am about the furthest possible thing from a Fiona Apple fan, or at least I was…
2) I am in love with her latest album, Extraordinary Machine. A friend gave me a copy of it a couple of weeks ago.
3) Really - I’m in love! I love nearly 1/2 of the songs on the album. That’s saying a lot, in my book.
4)My favorite tracks are:
the title track (Extraordinary Machine)
O’Sailor (I mean, come on - Sailor? Hot.)
Tymps (The Sick In The Head Song)
Parting Gift
Window
*and*
Please Please Please
– Honorable mentions go to “Oh Well” and “Not about Love”
5) I was never into her first album, Tidal, at all. Sure, I could stomach the songs that got radio play (Shadowboxer, Criminal), but I was far too riot grrrl (Seriously. With three r’s.) at the time to pay her any mind.
6) LOVE. Love I say! The album, not the waif.

*phew*
I’m a convert, I guess?
I suppose I should explain.
The album’s a throwback.
It’s very jazzy and bluesy - even brings thoughts of Judy Garland in her prime to my head at moments. I love it.

Of course, I’m way behind the time seeing as it came out last October.
Better late than never.
Let me know if you want to hear any of the songs - I’d gladly share.

Favorite lyrics? Too many to name. Now that’s love.

I loved you in “Footloose!”01.25.06

I bet he got that all the time.
Rest in Peace, Chris Penn.

I heard about his death on the radio and kept thinking… “Who is he… who is he… - Dude, isn’t he the guy from ‘Footloose?’”
And, I was right. I win.

You know, you’d think there would be a Footloose fan site out there somewhere on the internets. Seriously. I had a total crush on Chris Penn in that movie, but can’t find a picture of him (back then) anywhere.

“Scuse me while I kiss this guy!01.03.06

I could easily write my own directory of misheard lyrics.
I’m not sure if I’ve got auditory neuropathy or what, but I mishear things way more often than I should.

Case in point, an hour ago I was pumping gas at a local Holiday (Celebrate!) Station, when I overheard Alanis “I wish I knew the real definition of irony, or at the very least knew the difference between ironic and unfortunate situations” Morissette (though, to her credit, “Isn’t it Unfortunate?” is not nearly as catchy) on the speakers above the pumps.
Any-hoo, I looked it up and the song is called “Everything.”
I’ve always thought the lyrics were,
“You see everything, you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dog.”
Naturally, the real lyric is,
“You see everything, you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark.”
I mean, that makes perfect sense.
I dunno - it sounds like she’s saying “dog,” and Alanis isn’t exactly a lyrical genius… so I wrongly assumed.

One of the most embarrassing misheard lyrics that I believed for the majority of my young life was actually the title of a song.
You know “Secret Agent Man?”
Try “Secret Asian Man.”
Yeah. That’s what I thought.

Check on It12.23.05

Everyone MUST watch this video.

Beyoncé - Check on It - only viewable in IE

I’ve been trying to perfect Beyoncé’s humpity-walk-dance (in heels), and suggest you do the same.
It’s all the rage - she does it in seven different outfits!
My favorite, though - is her “innocent” look (complete with headband).
Classic.

In all seriousness, I love the song and the video is so bad it’s good.
Or maybe it’s just bad…
The jury’s still out.

All I want for Christmas is…12.14.05

PRINCE!
I want a NPG music club membership - it’s a one-time $25 fee.
If I don’t get it, I’m buying it for myself - so many perks!

Also something that I am in dire need of (I swear) is the Aeon Flux box set.
I say the cartoon Aeon trumps Charlize Theron’s Aeon any day.
mmm… Aeon Flux….

I think this should be a music, clothes, and books holiday.
I’ve got some of the music/books covered on my Amazon wishlist, which I desperately need to update (to find mine, just search my firstname lastname or plug in my Yahoo! e-mail address) .

As far a clothes?
Gift certificates would be awesome, but most likely I’ll be buying them for myself after the holidays.

I love giving gifts, too.
So holler if you need anything!

So Many White Folks, So Little Rhythm12.11.05

I just got home from the B.B. King show.
He’s such a ham - I love that guy.
I went, with my family, to celebrate my dad’s 57th birthday.
It was a great time.

Now I’ve got a big ‘ol beer buzz going on and must head to bed - soon!

For a recap -
We went to The Local for appetizers (dessert!) and drinks (I highly recommend their Irish Coffee) before the show.
Then we went to the show, where I was very underwhelmed by Keri Noble’s opening performance as well as the squeaky-voiced auctioneer whose tuxedo pants were WAY TOO LONG (not that I’m complaining. ;). It was a benefit event. We were not informed.
After the show, we tried to head to Tryg’s for drinks (they were closed for a private event), then tried Mojito (also closed - maybe for good? - I’d never been there) and then ended up at McCoy’s Public House. Tasty…. beer…
What a weird name for a bar/restaurant - “public house?” Is that like a fancy pants hostel with food and drink?

I first saw B.B. in 2002 - the man has not missed a beat!
80 years old and rocking my socks off for nearly two hours.
Right on man, right on.

I’ve had the most un-Minnesotan weekend so far - a friend and I were hit on by a plethora of punk rock pretties @ Twilight (so forward!) and generally scoped to the max (yo) all night long on Friday. Tonight, I visited two places I’d never been.
It’s been quite the weekend - I wonder what tomorrow has in store…

It is so way past my bedtime.
Nite!

“I’m like flypaper for bisexuals!”11.04.05

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Last night I had a fantastic time out with friends for frou frou drinks and spicy grub at The King and I Thai. It was super fun and their drinks were super strong (though, I was having just as much time pre-drinking as I did post — I swear)!

Afterwords, we walked over to the 19 Bar.
Apparently it’s the oldest gay Bar in Minneapolis and also just about the only (gay) bar in town that I hadn’t been to.
LOVED IT.
A very chill place with pool tables, darts, a centrally-located bar, a funlaughsgoodtimes jukebox, and a smokin’ patio outside.
There was a sighting of a local blogger, crazy chat about Africa, Americanization, and dreadlocks as well as general merry-making with friends.
I loved it and would definitely go there again sometime.

In other queer news…
On Saturday there are SO MANY GOOD SHOWS in Minneapolis. I can’t really handle it.
There’s a Homocore show at The Uptown Bar, a Eufio show at The Belfry (3753 Bloomington), an Ellis/Ember Swift show at The Bryant-Lake Bowl, AND a Cheap Cologne CD Release Party at the Dinkytowner (recommended by my brother).
Oy! What’s a girl to do?
I’m thinking I’ll hit up Homocore first and if for some odd reason I’m not feeling it, head to one of the other places.
Figures that all the good shows are happening on the same day - these kids need to get together and look at their calendars - make room for more people to see their stuff.
It’s all in the planning.

Oh no he didn’t!10.05.05

Frankie J has released a cover version of Extreme’s “More than words.”
(click the link above, then click on ENTER to hear it)
Oh hell to the naw!

The original song (you can listen to a snippet of it here), was not a good song!
The only thing it’s good for is cheesing out in your car on long road trips, singing along at the top of your lungs while blasting “Monster Ballads.”
That’s it!
It did not need to be re-made!
In fact, the cover sounds wimpier than the original, which I honestly never thought possible.
Way to suck it up, Frankie J, way to be.

In other news, Everyone’s Favorite Virgin (soon to be Mrs. Cruise) is pregnant.
Sluts!
Immaculate conception, anyone?

Even better - here’s their “If They Mated” shots from Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
before - after
Now I know what the baby’s going to look like!

Acne Core!09.30.05

Tonight, I went to The Uptown Bar and saw Scream Club (and others).

WHAT A GREAT SHOW!
I’m so glad that I went!

Not only did I get to dance like crazy and grin from ear to ear, but also - I ran into an old, dear friend from high school.

An amazing evening.
And to think - I almost didn’t leave home.

It was a Homocore show (damn, homocore really needs to get a website) - which I assumed was extinct (haven’t heard a peep about homocore minneapolis since the 90s) - but apparently homocore is back!

Thank you resident homo Lisa Ganser.
You get a gold star.

Long story short, Scream Club is amazing (and hilarious) live.
If you ever get a chance, check ‘em out - just don’t forget to bring your dancin’ shoes.
