Saving Hearts All Over The World Tonight04.02.08

Lately I’ve been interested in a lot of music that makes me feel like a teenager.
I suppose I do act like one from time to time.
It’s a job hazard.

I have also been annoyed with many typical “teen” things. One text speak that bugs the dickens out of me is “idk” (for “I don’t know”). I see it at work way too often, was text’d it today, and my bff just used it in an IM. Actually, it’s fine in text or IM but in formal writing? No way!

Anyway, I have felt quite silly in my musical taste/tendencies as of late.
Here are two examples:

1) I love the “Touch My Body” video (link here).
It cracks me up.
Something about the nerdy guy fantasy - I didn’t pay enough attention to the video the first time I watched it and I kept wondering why she was into laser tag, playing with remote control cars, and frolicking in costume with horses.
OF COURSE. It’s the nerd’s fantasy. Rock on.
I think all of this stems from the fact that I had a few really hot friends growing up. I can totally relate to the “compu nerd” in the video.

2) I’ve been enjoying “With You” by Chris Brown.
It took me a while to find out who the singer was. I thought the lyric was “saving hearts all over the world tonight” (which I, apparently, was relating to), but I was incorrect. I still like the song, though the video doesn’t do as much for me as Mariah’s. Click here to watch it.
I also thought he said “I need to move” at the beginning of the song. He actually says “I need you boo.” Hmm. See, now, what if I mishear stuff all the time and run around liking multiple songs for all the wrong reasons? That’s trouble, I tell ya.

Enjoy!

Two hours later - two more. :)
1) Sexy Can I by Ray J (ooh dirty)
2) Take a Bow (no video yet) by Rihanna (a quality bitter break-up song)

R.E.M. speeds things up with “Accelerate”03.22.08

Late last night/early this morning, I purchased a copy of Spin magazine at the Las Vegas airport.
R.E.M. was on the cover and I couldn’t help myself.
I, like many of their fans, have not been too fond of their last few albums. That’s not to say that i didn’t enjoy a song here or there - I love “Daysleeper,” “Bad Day,” “Imitation of Life,” and “At My Most Beautiful.”
None of their last few albums were as palatable through and through as their earlier stuff, that I would attest to.
Regardless, I love R.E.M. and am excited for their new album (click on “Accelerate” to hear sample tracks). It’s garnering great reviews, and some controversy. Michael Stipe, as he has done for many years now, mentions his boyfriend in the interview. Apparently people didn’t know that he was queer? If you’ve read articles about R.E.M. for the past 10+ years, I would say that it’s pretty obvious that Michael is not hiding his sexuality. Go figure.

In response, he released this adorable tongue-in-cheek video. Check it out.

If you’re an old R.E.M. geek like me, I’d suggest picking up a copy of the latest issue of Spin magazine. The article was very well-written and included some nice photos. Is it April 1st yet?

Added (3/23) - hear R.E.M. live at SXSW (click this link) - Thanks, Stacia!

10,000 posts to make, 9,999 left to go02.24.07

So much to say - too much time wasted working to say it.
Sad day!

I am going (weather permitting) to the Erin McKeown show at The Cedar Cultural Center tonight.
You should too.

Update: 7pm
I don’t think I’m going.
DAMN THIS WEATHER!
If I lived closer, or if it was just one bus (no transfers) away, I’d so be there.

They’ll Destroy You With Their Lies08.25.06

What a night!

I saw The Flaming Lips and Sonic Youth last night.
AMAZING!
Or, as one guy in the crowd shouted, “You guys are really good!”
Yup. Sonic Youth is A-Ok, alright.

And, like apparently everyone else in the show (especially the boys - not that there’s anything wrong with that), I am in love with Wayne. I’m just sayin. He’s Guy Smiley! (a smiley guy)

Also of note, this was the first time EVER that I’ve been to a show and the line for the guys bathroom was longer than the line for the girls room. There was no line! Rock!

It’s going in my Top 10 favorite shows. Probably in the top 5. mmmhmm that’s right.

My brother says I need to blog more - so - coming soon I’ll have movie reviews for “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Talladega Nights.”
Stay tuned, blog fans.
I’ve gotta run - my time’s up at the Carver County Library (yay Chaska!).

In the words of the drunk man who entered the fair just before me, “You’re all a bunch of shit asses!”
Have a great weekend.

I’m becoming obtuse!07.26.06

Growing up, I was always amused by adults (and others) who didn’t get the meaning behind pop/hip hop song lyrics. For a kid from the sticks, I was pretty good at deciphering (dirty/hidden) meaning in a song lyric and/or making sense out of new words and phrases in pop music.

Nowadays - I think I’m losing my touch!
I heard “London Bridge,” by Fergie* (from The Black Eyed Peas) on the radio this morning - I was listening to the lyrics - and I just don’t get it!
I thought that looking them up online might help…
Well, actually, it’s the chorus that I just can’t decipher:
How come every time you come around
My London London Bridge want to go down
Like London London want you to go down
Like London London be going down

Excuse me?
Now, I shall try googling the meaning behind the song’s title….
I will also check out Urban Dictionary
Nothing.
Anyone know what it means?

*The-Opposite-of-Awesome:
1) She humps a royal guard (ooh - London!) in the video. Nasty.
2) Many women like her, like, in a sexual way. I don’t get it! She looks so plastic! And evil! - It’s the eyebrows, among other things.

He’s single again!07.26.06

Prince’s wife just filed for divorce.
How do Jehovah’s Witnesses view divorce, anyway?
It’s his second, for the record.

Who wants to make bets that he chases after Carmen Electra a second time now that they’re both single!
Woo!
Too bad she’s afraid of his controlling ways.

Oh Prince, I love ya, but I can’t even imagine being married to you.

*Info from C.J. (shudder)
Have I mentioned how much it grates my nerves that she calls him “Symbolina?”
SO MUCH!

Sarcasm alert!07.26.06

Lance Bass is gay?
Oh, honey - I had no idea! Hold on a mo ment…
I thought he was just a pioneer in the “metrosexual” movement.
Oh, my girlish dreams have been shattered - shattered!

Scream if you love Scream Club!06.16.06

I saw Scream Club last night for the second time, at the Hexagon Bar (I’d never been!).
What fun!
Unfortunately, their set wasn’t as long as last time but they still put on a heckuva show.
Started pretty late and I was beat from the heat so I left after their set and headed to bed.

It’s kind of amusing that the “old, dear friend” that I ran into at their last local show is now my roommate.
Awesome.

If they come to your town, I’d highly suggest checking them out.
If not for the queer/feminist lyrics, then for the synchronized dance moves and blingin’ outfits.
mmmhmmm that’s right.

Tainted Music03.16.06

Does Soft Cell know about this?

There’s a god-awful song being played on Top 40 radio these days called “S.O.S” and it’s by Rihanna.
In this (poor excuse for a) song, they sample the beat from “Tainted Love.”
Blasphemy!

Don’t mess with my song.

Hip Hop is Alive and Kickin’ in Minneapolis!03.12.06

Unfortunately, last night, hip hop lived at the Dinkytowner. I dare say it’s one of the worst venues in the twin cities to actually see a show.

That said, the show was great! Among those performing were Black Blondie, 4/10th of Doomtree, and Z-man (from San Fran).

I was definitely impressed by Black Blondie as well as the 4/10 of Doomtree (which included Dessa, Cecil Otter, and an amazing freestyling rapper/MC from L.A. whose name I don’t know offhand).

Z-man was not as impressive. In fact, he lipsynched the majority of his songs.
What a waste!
His energy was great, but the lipsynching was pathetic.

Anyway, you can find most of them on Myspace (click on “Music”) and check out www.doomtree.net for info on them.

Good, good stuff.
