Rumor has it…01.08.06

I just saw Rumor Has It.
Rumors were that the movie stinks - the truth is, it’s not awful, but it’s definitely not good.
It actually has a number of well-intentioned but horribly timed and executed jokes in the movie.
And, you know, Jennifer Aniston is looking good throughout the flick.

The real reason I’m writing about the movie at all is to note two dialect-specific things.
1) I could have sworn that Mark Ruffalo had a Minnesotan accent throughout much of the movie. I just looked it up, and I was close. He’s from Wisconsin.
2) Kevin Costner seemed to be imitating Dustin Hoffman’s speech patterns from The Graduate in his role as “Beau Burroughs.” It’s very strange to hear Hoffman-speak coming out of Costner’s mouth.

Are you trying to seduce me, Mrs. Robinson?

All in all, I’d give it a 5.6 out of 10 stars (I gave it a 6 on IMDB, just to be nice).
Not quite good enough to be a 6, but in no way bad enough to be a 5.
Timing, people. It’s all about the timing and delivery.

In related news, Richard Jenkins (who plays the father in the movie), has been getting a heck of a lot of work since Six Feet Under. Good for him.

Pride & Prejudice12.21.05

Short and sweet movie review.

Scenery: beautiful.
Man Candy: gorgeous.
Matthew MacFadyen specifically: a perfect balance of sullen and brooding in his performance, amazing eyes.
Keira Knightley: slumps forward a lot when walking.
Romance: 210%. Mushy cute mush mush.
Jane Austen’s books: refuse to read ‘em. tripe.

I’d give it 7.5/10.

Jake and Heath on the Mountain12.18.05

Make that Jack and Ennis.

It was a beautiful film, but their love story was not so beautiful.
It was unfortunate and impossible.
And, unfortunately, quite sad.
The New Yorker used to have the short story that the movie is based on posted on their site, but the link is no longerworking.
I have put up the short story for y’all to read here.

I went with a large group of friends, three of whom were crying at the end (possibly four) and one who sobbed after the show.
The sobber was my friend Matty.
He is me, in gay male form, wearing even more emotions on his sleeve than I do (a daunting task, I am quite certain).

This film strikes me on a far too personal level.
For the majority of it, it was quite easy to stay detached from their story, until the end - that final moving moment/scene was what made such a strong connection (for myself, and some in my party).

I struggle extra hard with this film because I feel like I’ve had two big loves in my life that were/are unfortunate. Right person wrong time or wrong person right time - I’m inclined to say the former.

It hurts that we live in a world where things like this still go on and where being closeted is the only way to be if you want to live (period).
I dated a horse rider and trainer and honestly believe that the only reason she is now married to a man is for the same reason that Ennis/Jack married women.
I’m not saying that they can’t/don’t love each other - I’m just saying that for her, ultimately, to stay in the world of riding/training/the good ‘ol boys and be successful, she had to marry a guy.
There was no other choice.

Part of my heart aches for a lifelong love and wonders if I’ve already had it and let it go (or been let go) due to unfortunate circumstances.
Another part of me wants someone like Jack after me, so I can say yes to true love and connection instead of things ending to perceived or simply untolerated imperfection.
The other (big, huge) romantic sucker part of me thinks it (love) should never have to be that hard and feels that I deserve (such a funny word, deserve) a big time love without limit or secrets, regardless of gender.
Bah.

Enough mushy crap - I agree with this one.
More action!

I’m still waiting for a *good* mainstream flick (drama) that centers around GLBT characters that are not killed, closeted/self-loathing, murderers, or psychopaths. Is that too much to ask?

All I want for Christmas is…12.14.05

PRINCE!
I want a NPG music club membership - it’s a one-time $25 fee.
If I don’t get it, I’m buying it for myself - so many perks!

Also something that I am in dire need of (I swear) is the Aeon Flux box set.
I say the cartoon Aeon trumps Charlize Theron’s Aeon any day.
mmm… Aeon Flux….

I think this should be a music, clothes, and books holiday.
I’ve got some of the music/books covered on my Amazon wishlist, which I desperately need to update (to find mine, just search my firstname lastname or plug in my Yahoo! e-mail address) .

As far a clothes?
Gift certificates would be awesome, but most likely I’ll be buying them for myself after the holidays.

I love giving gifts, too.
So holler if you need anything!

RENT12.03.05

I love the movie, I love the blog (complete with video clips).
No, I have NEVER *gasp shame shame cry gasp faint* seen the live musical.

You know why?
Because I grew up acting and doing a heck of a lot of musical theatre. When I hit 16 (when RENT premiered on Broadway), I started going to a school that didn’t have musical theatre or musicals.
I became a “serious actor” (hah) and wasn’t into musicals.
Plus, RENT had a lot of buzz and I (unfortunately, in this case) tend to avoid things that are the latest craze.
So there. Don’t get all elitist on my ass, kids.

Speaking of elitist, check out this “usericon” that I found on livejournal.

Give me a break!

I love the movie, have seen it twice and laughed and cried like the big softy I am both times.
I am in way too much love with Jesse L. Martin (look at him, he’s so cute, mmm kiss) at this point in time.
I love the Collins-Angel relationship, everything about it.
I love seeing Jesse L. Martin smile (and hearing him sing).

It’s crush city up in here.
Population: Me.

I’m glad the movie exists to expose the musical to a wider audience.
I’m so glad that the majority of the original cast signed on to do the movie.
And, to anyone else who calls the movie cheesy - It’s a MUSICAL.
It’s supposed to be cheesy.
You want real cheese - rent “Singin’ in the Rain” or “The Sound of Music” and shut yer yap!

The Family Stone10.20.05

I saw a free preview screening of The Family Stone tonight.
It was quite good, though some parts (don’t want to give a spoiler here) were a bit cheesy and predictable for my liking.

Of note:
There was a deaf character in the film, played by actor Tyrone Giordano.
Not only was he deaf, but…
something else (again, don’t want to spoil it).

Good holiday flick, top notch.
I’d give it a 7/10.

Good to see some signing (definitely not ASL, or fluent) in a movie.
Choppy though it was.

You’re a jerk!10.13.05

What an awful day.

Today can only be made better with fond memories of watching Grey Gardens (It’s a must-see!) and tripping with a twirly Kohl’s bag laughter last night.

Edith ‘Little Edie’ Bouvier Beale: You can’t have your cake and eat it, too in life.
Edith ‘Big Edie’ Bouvier Beale: Oh, yes, I did. I did, I had my cake, loved it, masticated it, chewed it and had everything I wanted.

Everything else can go to hell.

It’s Official08.21.05

As of right now, Cillian Murphy can do no wrong in my eyes.
I have loved him in 28 Days Later, Girl With a Pearl Earring, Batman Begins, and now Red Eye.
I can’t decide if I really loved the movie or if I just have a thing for both Cillian and Rachel (McAdams).
Time will tell.

Also, I saw a preview for the movie Stay, with Ryan Gosling (of “The Notebook” fame) and can’t wait for that.

Celebrity crush city!

Last night, I went to BALLS with three crazy ladies.
BALLS, sadly, does not have a current website, though you can read old stuff here and get show time/location info over here (click on “BALLS!” on the left).
The show was amazing and I nearly got teary at the end, missing my theatrical roots.
Someday…

Leslie Ball is amazing.

I saw a girl from high school in the show, too.
I never know if she recognizes me when I see her around town.
Maybe one of these days I’ll say hello.

Good things08.02.05

This one pointed out the following website to me the other day.
I just spent a good 20 minutes listening to random sound clips from it - I’m in love!
You must check it out!

Some of my favorite clips on the site include:
an “Apples and Bananas” cover
Masturbating in a Dressing Room” (work safe, actually)
JIBBERISH FREESTYLE WHAT WHAT
I am slightly awesome
AND LASTLY
Reverse Escargot

Sadly for me, the site does not have an RSS feed.
Woe, alack.

Also, like many other indie-film-lovers, I’m incredibly smitten with Me and You and Everyone We Know. I’m also in love with the soundtrack and big thanks go to AimeeG for posting the link. Take a listen yourself, right here.
And my current screensaver?
))<>((
forever.
(white text on a pink background)
You know it!

Lately I’ve seen about one good movie for every third mediocre movie. I need to up my ratio by seeing Happy Endings and Broken Flowers, and soon.
As it is, I watched Mortal Kombat (not my choice) at work today and am going to see Must Love Dogs with a few friends from school on Thursday.
There’s no hope for me.
