Dear Hallmark Hall of Fame,04.20.08

If you are going to produce a movie about deafness, Deaf Culture, and cochlear implants, please include all of the signing with the frame!

It’s so frustrating to be following along with the signing and then have it cut to someone’s reaction while the other person is still signing. Especially during a conversation involving all deaf people.

Once again, deaf and hard of hearing folks will have to watch a movie about their culture, filmed by hearing people, without respect for their culture. They have to access it through written English (closed captioning).
What a disappointment.

The play is better, anyway (I saw it at Mixed Blood a few years ago).

Excessive Force Used By Police When Pulling Over a Local Deaf Man12.02.06

I’m in shock.

I’ll get in touch with those in the know and hopefully have more info on Monday.

Edit — Sunday.
There are pics here, but no more specific details, unfortunately.

He’s a Republican?09.10.06

Bummer.

I can’t say that I’ve often voted Republican.

I can say that I’m intrigued to see if a Deaf man will win a seat in the House of Representatives this year (District 64B).
That man is Emory Dively.

Last weekend, as I was driving from the airport to The (New) Chatterbox Pub in Highland Park, I kept seeing political signs with sign language (fingerspelling) on them.
I only noticed this in Highland Park and couldn’t remember the guy’s name.

Well, thanks to the wonders of the internets, now I know.

I wish he wasn’t a republican.
I’ve actually seen him doing his thing at his church (World Deaf Assembly of God - Highland Park).
A sermon all about how man serves God first, then his wife, then his children.
Man is head of household.
He’s second to God in all things, with his wife and children pulling up the rear.
Naturally.

Good luck, Emory.
I don’t agree with your politics, but I would love to see a Deaf man from Minnesota in the House of Representatives.

Sweet!04.07.06

I’m at the bar on the second floor of my hotel in Louisville, stealing wireless internet.
Life is good!
Yay for conferences having unsecured wireless, only on the conference floor.

So, I can’t get internet in my room (sadly) but at least I can get it here at the bar!

If only the waitress would stop ignoring me and let me order a glass of wine, I’d be in heaven!

Just had a huge tornado and it’s thunderstorming outside and my hotel room happens to be on the top (18th) floor, because I’m just that fancy.

Update: (5 min later) I have wine - SUCCESS!

True Story03.14.06

Only in my profession is the phrase, “I hope you become deaf,” a compliment.

The Family Stone10.20.05

I saw a free preview screening of The Family Stone tonight.
It was quite good, though some parts (don’t want to give a spoiler here) were a bit cheesy and predictable for my liking.

Of note:
There was a deaf character in the film, played by actor Tyrone Giordano.
Not only was he deaf, but…
something else (again, don’t want to spoil it).

Good holiday flick, top notch.
I’d give it a 7/10.

Good to see some signing (definitely not ASL, or fluent) in a movie.
Choppy though it was.
